I have a DreamWorks... says Spielberg
DreamWorks has bought the rights to the life story of Martin Luther
King Jr, and is set to make a biopic of the Civil Rights leader. Steven
Spielberg, Suzanne de Passe and Madison Jones will produce the film.
This
is the first film to be authorised by Dr King's estate, which holds
copyright on all his speeches and books, including the "I have a dream"
speech.
"We are all honored that the King Estate is giving us the
opportunity to tell the story of these defining, historic events," said
Empire editor Spielberg. "It is our hope that the
creative power of film and the impact of Dr. King's life can combine to
present a story of undeniable power that we can all be proud of."
The
project's something that Spielberg and DreamWorks CEO and co-chairman
Stacy Snider have been working on for some time, and they've now set it
up to go ahead with de Passe and Jones, who among other things
co-produced one of President Obama's inaugural balls.
There's no
word on a screenwriter or casting yet, but let's hope this moves ahead
slightly more quickly than Spielberg's oft-delayed Lincoln project.
And can you think of anyone who could play King? Or will they need an unknown?

Christina Ricci is "Born to Be a Star."
The actress has signed on for the porn-tinged comedy that Adam Sandler
co-wrote and is producing with Jack Giarraputo. Longtime Sandler associates Allen
Covert and Barry Bernardi also are producing the flick, which Tom Brady is
directing.
The story centers on a small-town nerd who stumbles upon a family secret:
His quiet and demure parents were famous porn stars in the 1970s. This
motivates him to leave Northern Iowa for Hollywood, hoping to follow in their
footsteps and fulfill his destiny as the biggest adult-film star in the world.
Ricci, the female lead, is the guy's innocent girlfriend.
Despite Sandler and Giarraputo's involvement, the movie is not a Happy
Madison production but rather by porn title-friendly entity Miles Deep Prods.
The movie will act as a negative pickup for Sony, which will release it through
one of its labels.

he estimable Vanity Fair has just published a series of lovely portraits from the set of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. Very nice, go see.
Shot
by Brigitte Lacombe, the seven shots aren’t stills from the movie; but
they do give us some glorious looks at the key players from Tarantino’s
balls-out WWII flick, including Brad Pitt as Lt. Aldo Raine, Diane
Kruger, proving instantly why she was cast as the stunning German
actress, Bridget von Hammersmark, Eli Roth as one of the chief
Basterds, Donny Donowitz, Melanie Laurent as vengeful Jewish girl,
Shosanna and Christopher Waltz as the movie’s nominal villain, Col.
Hans Landa, aka The Jew Hunter.
Pitt and Kruger are afforded two
shots each, with Kruger posing at one point in front of a poster for a
film starring her on-screen character.
Of particular interest,
though, might be the black-and-white group shot featuring Tarantino and
various members of his cast, including Pitt, Roth, Kruger, Waltz and
Laurent. This shot takes place in Shosanna’s Parisian cinema, now
draped in Nazi regalia, where the movie’s climax, a chapter that may or
may not be called Revenge Of The Giant Face, takes place. And that’s
all we’re going to say about that.

Mark down September 18, 2009 on your calendars as the official release date and cross your fingers that the movie turns out good.
Also starring Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Simmons, Adam Brody and J.K. Simmons, Jennifer's Body follows the exploits of a hot cheerleader who becomes possessed by a demon via a Satan-worshipping rock band. Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon loves Christmas, because she gets to play chef for all of her family.
The Legally Blonde star loves cooking for her two children - Ava, nine, and Deacon, five, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe - and always makes sure the festive supper is a main part of the celebrations.
She says, "I have kids, so it's a lot about opening presents. And then I start cooking, and I really enjoy that part of it. They play with their toys, and I cook some dinner. It's nice."

Meeeeerry Christmas, Watchmen fans... The New York Times is reporting that a US District Court judge has concluded that 20th Century Fox "should prevail on crucial issues" in their lawsuit with Warner Bros. over who owns the rights to the much-anticipated Watchmen movie.
A trial to settle the dispute was planned for January, but now looks unlikely, with the judge recommending "the parties may wish to turn their efforts... to negotiating a resolution of this dispute."
This story will gather pace pretty quickly, but at the moment, here's how we see it...
1. It looks like Warners has pretty much lost its right to distribute any movie based on the Watchmen graphic novel. They might appeal but in the light of the judge's words, the case would now be pretty much unwinnable.
2. Fox and Warners need to strike a deal to split the movie's costs and takings. The problem here is that Warners is already divvying up with finance partner Legendary Pictures, so they'll be in no mood to be charitable.
3. The end result will probably be a joint distribution deal, but. because of both side's wide-apart positions, there's still a chance that Fox will delay - or even cancel - the movie's release.
Whatever happens, we can pretty much forget about that March release date.

Groundbreaking actress and the sultry singer of the stylishly sexy Christmas standard "Santa Baby," Eartha Kitt, died on Christmas Day in New York City, her publicist confirmed to CNN.
Kitt, 81, had been treated for colon cancer. Her daughter Kitt Shapiro was by her side at the time of her death.
Known primarily for singing in her distinctively raspy voice and purring like a cat as Catwoman on the '60s TV series Batman, Kitt was a star of stage, the small and big screen and music. She was nominated for three Tony awards, two Grammy awards and two Emmys, according to her official Web site.
A performer to the very end, Kitt taped a PBS special in Chicago six weeks ago that is set to air in February, CNN reports.
Born Dirt Poor
Leaving the cotton fields of South Carolina at the age of 4 to go live with an aunt in New York City's Harlem, Kitt began her career after she auditioned on a dare for the Katherine Dunham Dance Troupe – and landed a spot as a featured dancer and vocalist.
Touring Europe, she built a name for herself, then became famous in America when she appeared in the Broadway revue New Faces of 1952 – where she introduced "Santa Baby," as well as her other trademark songs, "C'est Si Bon" and "Monotonous."
Honored with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in 1960, Kitt became infamous for speaking out against American involvement in the Vietnam War while she was at a White House luncheon in 1968. It took a good 10 years for her career to recover, and she headlined on Broadway in the musical Timbuktu!
An Icon
She also became a staple on the cabaret circuit, and toured as the Wicked Witch in a national touring production of The Wizard of Oz, based on the classic 1939 movie.
Among her other accomplishments, she wrote three autobiographies. Only last week, "Santa Baby" was certified gold.
According to her bio, Kitt lived in Connecticut near her daughter and four grandchildren. They survive her – as does her reputation as an icon.

New parents Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman stayed home for the holidays, spending baby Sunday Rose's first Christmas in Nashville, where they split their time between two houses, one in town and one in the rural Leiper's Fork community.
Kidman recently promised "a lot of hugs and kisses and Christmas carols" for Sunday Rose to make the holiday special – plus one turtle puppet.
"She loves puppets," Kidman told PEOPLE of her daughter, 5 months.
But Sunday Rose stayed home when the couple recharged on Christmas Eve over a lunch of salad and a sandwich at Nashville's Bread & Company, one of their favorite local eateries. Dressed down in jeans and sweaters, they shared a booth in the busy cafe, chatting and laughing with another diner they knew who dropped by their table.
"They are so low-key," an observer told PEOPLE. "They looked like anyone else out doing last minute Christmas shopping. They just look so happy and comfortable with each other."
Urban recently took a break from recording his next album to film the video for his current single, "Sweet Thing." The video, shot in Spring Hill, Tenn., features the singer's own vintage Ford Mustang and is set for release in January. An album is due March 31.
